Tree Planting Ceremonies

Tree Planting Ceremony I - Sapling

(The Ceremony Table is directly behind Officiant.  On the Ceremony Table there is a sapling and a large pot.  On either side there are two buckets of dirt (each collected from each set of parents’ respective homes), two gardening trowels and a small watering can.)

Officiant:  ___(Groom)_____ and ___(Bride)_____, will you please step to the Ceremony Table.

(Officiant steps behind the Ceremony Table.  The Couple steps to the sides of the Ceremony Table.  A musical selection may play softly during the following:)

Officiant: The Couple will now take part in a Tree Planting Ceremony to symbolize the roots of their relationship, and the continued growth of their love.

Officiant: Love is the essence of human experience and it is the root of everything we, as humans, do. Love enriches our experience, and fills our lives with meaning. It gives us a firm base from which to grow, to learn, and change.

Officiant: ___(Groom)_____ and ___(Bride)_____, please plant the tree.

(The Couple places the sapling into the large pot.  They each pick up the trowels and scoop dirt from the buckets into the large pot.)

Officiant: Just like the tree you are planting, marriage requires constant nurturing and nourishment. So remember to nourish each other, with words of encouragement, trust, and love.

Officiant: ___(Groom)_____ and ___(Bride)_____, please water the tree.

(Groom picks up watering can and pours a small amount of water in the pot then hands the watering can to Bride who also pours a small amount of water in the pot.)

Officiant: Let your relationship and your love for each other be like this tree you plant today. Let it grow tall and strong, experiencing winds and rains and storms, but coming through unscathed. And, like a tree, your marriage must be resilient. It must weather the challenges of daily life and the passage of time. Look at this tree on a daily basis, for it will inspire each of you to grow and reach your fullest potential - just like this tree.

(The music fades and stops as the Couple and Officiant return to their previous places.)

Tree Planting Ceremony II - Larger Tree

(To the side of the Ceremony Site is a young tree, partially planted.  On either side there is a pile of dirt, a ceremonial shovel and a watering can.)

Officiant:  ___(Groom)_____ and ___(Bride)_____, will you please step over to the Ceremonial Tree.

(Officiant steps behind the Ceremonial Tree.  The Couple steps to the sides of the Ceremonial Tree.  A musical selection may play softly during the following:)

Officiant: The Couple will now take part in a Tree Planting Ceremony to symbolize the roots of their relationship, and the continued growth of their love.

Officiant:  ___(Groom)_____ and ___(Bride)_____, let your relationship and your love for each other be like this tree you plant today. Let it grow tall and strong.  Let it stand tall during the harsh winds and rains and storms, and come through unscathed.  Like a tree, your marriage must be resilient. It must weather the challenges of daily life and the passage of time.  And just like the tree you are planting, marriage requires constant nurturing and nourishment.

Officiant: ___(Groom)_____, please plant the tree.

(The volume of the music may be turned up as the Groom picks up the  ceremonial shovel and scoops dirt from the pile and places it around the base of the tree. The volume of the music is then turned down for the following:)

Officiant: ___(Bride)_____, please water the tree.

(The Bride picks up watering can and pours a small amount of water around the base of the tree. The music fades and stops as the Officiant continues…))

Officiant: Remember to nourish each other, with words of encouragement, trust, and love.  This is needed on a daily basis so you each can grow and reach your fullest potential - just like this tree.

(The Officiant and the Couple return to their previous places.)
